SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 3

Sharpe, Wagner and Wiedebusch)
Requesting the governor to declare February 6, 1995, as Babe
Ruth Day.
Whereas, George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895;
and
Whereas, While he was the incorrigible son of a
saloonkeeper and was sent away to an Industrial School for Boys,
George Herman Ruth overcame his trouble-making nature and thus
is a role model to all youths in how to transform the direction
of their lives; and
Whereas, George Herman Ruth was later nicknamed "Babe"
Ruth, "The Great Bambino", and "The Sultan of Swat"; and
Whereas, Ruth was the first sports superstar, the most
famous figure in the history of American sports and arguably the
greatest all-time American sports hero; and
Whereas, In 2503 games, Ruth had 2873 hits, 2056 walks, 2174 runs, 50 doubles, 136 triples, knocked in 2211 runs and
earned a .690 slugging average; and
Whereas, Ruth hit the highest number of home runs in
professional baseball in all but three seasons from 1918 to
1931, set the record for a season of 60 home runs in 1927 and
set a record of 714 home runs in his career, a record that stood
for forty years; and
Whereas, Ruth led the New York Yankees to seven American
League pennants and four World Series titles; and
Whereas, Ruth was thus the best offensive player in the
history of baseball; and
Whereas, Ruth also achieved early success as a professional
pitcher, was an excellent fielder as well and was arguably his
sport's most versatile player; and
Whereas, Ruth was selected in 1936 as one of the five
charter members of the Baseball Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, Ruth earned nearly $2,000,000 in his twenty-two
year career in professional baseball and deserved every penny of
it; and
Whereas, Upon his death in 1948, more than 100,000 people
viewed Ruth's bier as it rested in the rotunda of Yankee
Stadium; and
Whereas, Ruth was the most photographed and celebrated hero
of his day and remains a legend to posterity; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the achievements of "Babe" Ruth are duly recognized by
the people of the state of West Virginia in this, the centenary
year of his birth; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Legislature requests that the
governor name February 6, 1995, as Babe Ruth Day in West
Virginia; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the governor.
